Heating on the Gulf Coast Works a Little Differently
Most homes in Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Sarasota and Palmetto do not have a furnace in the garage. Instead, the same equipment that cools the house all summer also heats it in winter. In the majority of local homes that means a heat pump paired with an indoor air handler, and inside that air handler sits a bank of electric resistance heaters, usually called heat strips or a heat kit. Some older homes and condos use a straight air conditioner with heat strips only, with no heat pump at all.
Because the heating side of the system may sit unused for eight or nine months, problems tend to hide until the first chilly night in December or January. A reversing valve that sticks, a heat strip element that burned open last winter, or a thermostat that was never set up correctly for a heat pump will not show itself while the system is in cooling mode. That is why a little attention before the cool season goes a long way here.
Gulf Air Solutions is newly owned and operated by a technician with 15+ years of HVAC experience. We work on residential and light commercial heating across Manatee and Sarasota counties, and we explain what we find in plain language so you can make the call that makes sense for your home.

Emergency Heat vs. Auxiliary Heat, Explained
These two settings confuse a lot of Florida homeowners, and the confusion can show up on the power bill.
Auxiliary heat is automatic. When your heat pump is running but the house is falling behind, or when the outdoor unit goes into a defrost cycle, the thermostat brings on the electric heat strips to help. Seeing "AUX" on your thermostat for short stretches on a cold morning is normal. Seeing it constantly is a sign that something is off with the heat pump, the thermostat settings, or the wiring.
Emergency heat is a manual setting. It shuts the heat pump off completely and heats the home using only the electric strips. It exists for the situation its name suggests: the outdoor unit is damaged or not working and you need heat until it is repaired. Electric resistance heat costs considerably more to run than a heat pump, so emergency heat is meant as a temporary bridge, not an everyday mode.
If you find yourself relying on emergency heat to stay warm, that is a good time to call. In many cases the fix is a thermostat setup issue or a single failed component rather than a major repair.
That Burning-Dust Smell on the First Cold Morning
Heat strips collect a thin layer of dust over a long Florida summer. The first time they turn on, that dust burns off and you may notice a toasty, slightly burnt smell for a few minutes. That is usually harmless and fades quickly. If the smell is sharp, smells like hot plastic or wiring, comes with smoke, or keeps coming back, turn the system off at the thermostat and call (941) 919-3792 so the air handler can be inspected.
What a Heating Check-Up Includes
Heating maintenance is often combined with a spring or fall AC tune-up, since it is the same system. A typical visit covers:
- Testing the heat pump in heating mode and confirming the reversing valve shifts properly
- Checking heat strip elements, sequencers or relays, and limit switches
- Measuring amperage draw and inspecting electrical connections for heat or corrosion
- Verifying defrost operation on the outdoor unit
- Confirming the thermostat is configured for your equipment type and staging
- Inspecting the blower, filter and visible ductwork for airflow problems
- Checking the condensate drain, since heat pumps can produce water in both modes
- Walking you through what we found and anything worth watching
Repair or Replace Your Heating System?
Because heating and cooling share equipment in most Gulf Coast homes, the repair-or-replace question is really about the whole system. A failed heat strip, sequencer or capacitor is a straightforward repair on almost any system. A failed compressor or a leaking coil on an older heat pump is a bigger conversation, and we will lay out the honest numbers on both sides.
Age matters here. Salt air near the bays and barrier islands, long cooling seasons and summer storms are hard on outdoor equipment, so systems along the coast can wear faster than the national averages you see online. If your system is getting older and repairs are stacking up, our installation page covers how we size and select replacement equipment. If it is still in good shape, we will tell you that too.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do homes in Bradenton really need heating service?
Yes. Cold snaps are short but real, and most homes heat with the same heat pump or heat strips that sit idle all summer. A quick check before winter catches failed elements, reversing valve issues and thermostat problems before you need the heat.
Why is my heat pump blowing cool air?
Heat pump air in heating mode often feels cooler than furnace air, typically somewhere in the 80s to low 90s at the vent. If the air feels truly cold, the system may be stuck in cooling, low on refrigerant, in a defrost cycle or not bringing on backup heat. See our heat pump page for more.
Is it bad to run emergency heat?
It will not hurt the equipment, but it heats with electric resistance only, which costs considerably more to operate than the heat pump. Use it temporarily if the outdoor unit has failed, and call for service.
What does AUX mean on my thermostat?
AUX means the thermostat has turned on supplemental electric heat to help the heat pump. Short periods on cold mornings or during defrost are normal. If AUX is on most of the time, the heat pump or thermostat setup should be checked.
Is a burning smell from my heater normal?
A brief dusty smell the first time the heat runs each season is common as dust burns off the heat strips. A strong electrical or plastic odor, smoke, or a smell that keeps returning is not normal. Turn the system off and call (941) 919-3792.
Can heating maintenance be done with my AC tune-up?
Yes. In most local homes the heating and cooling equipment are the same system, so we can check both in one visit. Our Gulf Comfort Club schedules visits ahead of each season.
Do you work on commercial heating systems?
Yes. Gulf Air Solutions serves both residential and commercial customers, including packaged heat pump units and split systems in offices and retail spaces. See our commercial HVAC page.
